TroisCouleurs - Bleu

Description

"Trois Couleurs" - Bleu (Emerging)

Note: two of three comissioned pieces - Thanks Jen!

I tried to capture the feeling of the color Blue with invoking a very slow, purposeful, yet strong scene. Here, the subject is rising out of the cold river waters with his flag intact. The linework in this one is more deliberate and doesn't quite have as much action as say Red. Where Red was sketchy, this one is solid and unyielding. I had originally planned on putting in the Statue of Liberty in the background (as I had with Bluepen2 [link] ) but decided it would detract from my focus of the subject and flag. The flag itself I decided to leave kinda unfinished. Just some basic folds and lights/darks were put in to give it some depth. In addition to the flag, the river goes into nothingness. I really could have spent all day with ripples, waves, and water reflections, but I wanted to leave it uncomplicated.

Red = freedom
Blue = contemplation/somber
White= (haven't started that one yet ^^)

Estimated time: 1 1/2 hrs

Medium: HB & 5B pencil, white charcoal on blue colored Mi-Teintes paper

Yes, the title is from a movie

The white stars are a really nice touch. They're almost like beacons. I also quite like how this sort of bridges the gap between cartoon caricature and specific realism.
